Just bought a set of new tires for a bumper pull horse trailer. The old ones (F78) were so cracked and old that they started leaking as did the valve stems. What is the best things I can do to protect them from the elements? This trailer is stored outside in MAJOR temperature changes (Minnesota) directly on the ground. I was planing on buying covers for the tires to protect them from UV rays since the spare looks like new. Is this a good idea? Should I get them off the ground some how?

Scott: Most of the folks around here that have either RV's or campers that are stored over the winter swear by the covers. A good friend suggests blocking it off the ground as well. Can't hurt.

did you buy trailer tires ?
i do not recomend passenger car tires for trailer use.
yes-as least cover the tires that get sun-depends on how you park it
yes- un loading the tires will prevent 'flat' spoting the tires-that is sometimes-not reverseable.
recomend running 50-60 psi

Yes, I did buy trailer tires. The rating on the sidewall of the tire is 50psi which is what they are filled to. Are you suggesting over filling them or under filling them? Are you also suggesting lifting them off the ground or just parking them on boards so they do not contact the ground?

ok, you have actual trailer tires-rated-6 ply or so?
the 'max' sidewall pressure is 50 psi, that is what i would set it at.
if the trailer is going to be 'parked' for an extended period-2-3 months-i recomend getting the load off the tires-that is what causes flat spotting the tires.
IF you can drag the trailer -1/4 mile once a month the flat spoting should not be a problem.
but still cover them from sun lite
