We are living in an old home and there is a floor to ceiling exposed, unused brick chimney that we wish to decorate. The chimney measures 18 inches on the 3 exposed sides. We have considered a vinyl lattice treatment with hangers for utensils since this is next to the gas stove. Also could use shelves, plants etc.
Any ideas that improve on this strategy? Thanks.

Welcome to the forums! Verify the measurements. That's awfully small for a "chimney", but not for a flue pipe enclosure. You could apply stucco over the brick, or you could tile it.

Hi TSWhitter

The solution will depend of the place / room / finishing of the room where the chimney is.

However, a vinyl latice will look more like an exterior element. A wonderfull idea that fits all the styles and budgets is a faux finish treatment. There are DIY kits ready to use, you will find them a Home Depot, Lowes, etc. You can finish it with a Tuscan look and hang rustic elements like cooper pieces, or old ceramic pots or , if ythe chimney is close to the kitchen, you can set a collection wood spoons, for example (I did this in my breakfast nook)
