We are building a house, and our builder had a non-painter, or somone with experience, caulk the exterior for painting.

Is it typical to use white caulk next to tan window clad? That probably wouldn't be so much of an issue if he didn't get noticable amounts of caulk on the clad. House will be painted a tanish green color.

We don't want to insult the builder by brining this up, but we also want to ensure we don't see tan - white caulk - then house color after the paint job.

Tinted caulk could have been used and hindsight is 20-20 but this could have been discussed ahead of time although obviously I don't know how much interaction you, your painter and the other person have.the caulk used probably is paint-able but as for the caulk on the windows that is the "contractor's" fault, which I assume is the painter and he should make it right. Also the caulk would have been pretty easy to get off while it was soft but set up I'm not sure what the best way to remove it is.there are caulk removing products but maybe some of the painter's on here also have techniques.

The contractor is actually the builder. He had some kid not associated with the painter caulk it. That is a whole other issue in itself...

We actually inquired to the builder this morning, and he said the "outside edge of the clad gets painted, so all of the caulking will be painted." This makes no sense to me, as I've never seen the entire outside edge of clad get painted.

We have no problem asking that the job is done right, but want to ask pro's before engaging in that conversation. Opinions that I have received already are 1) tinted caulk is typically used, and 2) shouldn't have been so sloppy.

If the siding or everything but the clad window, paints - I would have used white caulk..... but the caulk joint would be neat and the paint that covers it would extend just a hair onto the clad to insure coverage of the white caulk. I suspect they intend to paint the face of the clad because they lack the skill to cut the paint in neatly. Depending on what the caulking looks like, it may be the only real option now.

As noted above it's an easy job to remove excess caulk while it's wet although nothing beats having the skill to apply it properly to start with. Once dry, a rough rag, some liquid and a LOT of elbow grease is the best way to remove the caulk.
