hey all,
i have been reading posts on this all night, and my conclusions are torn. i am a builder/contractor and have always installed decent hvac equipment. i just recently built my home and installed a trane unit in it. i have had 15 service calls on this unit in 2 1/2 yrs. trane has actually given me a 10yr parts and labor on it, due to the problems. just recently, i have had to put 3 drain pans (coil) in it due to cracking in a two week period, and the tx valve too. my problem is, i am finishing off my 2nd floor and need to install a 2 1/2 ton unit in the attic. i do not want to have the same issues as i have had with my 1st floor unit. floods and other misc problems would be a disaster on my 2nd floor. i understand there will be a safety pan but i don't need the hassle and fear that something bad is going on in my attic. been reading about goodman and payne (not sure of spelling). i really want to put something in that is going to be problem free for at least a few years. maybe i just got a bad unit/s? it would look funny having 2 different units side by side if i ever sold this place too. any help at this point would be great.

Sounds like a bad install if you are having that many issues. I have a Trane and will be 5 years old next month, and never had to have service on ti.

Has it been the same company/tech out each time you had the service call on it?

First I would not recommend putting the Air Handler in the attic.
If it's easy to access it will be more likely maintained.
Next you want to make sure if you do put it in the attic there is a big enough attic access to put the system up there and take it down when it's time to be replaced.
I would recommend systems that qualify for the tax credit. These are higher Efficiency models and normally are made with better manufactured parts.

For your Trane, what model do you have?
Not all Trane models are the same in quality just like Carrier, Bryant, Lennox, Rheem, ect.. They have different levels of models.

It like comparing a Trane XB13 to a Trane XL20i there is no comparison.
