Is it possible to measure the square footage of a building from the inside?

It is possible, but it is more work and you will get a lower square footage because of the walls.
A big thing is what the number is used for. Different uses of the sf number have different acceptable methods and practices of determining the square footage.

To measure from the inside...you'd have to measure each room, hallway, bath, closet, etc and multiply the width by the length. The problem is that can be changed by removing walls or changing the layout of kitchens, etc. I think thats why most realtor listings are done by just measuring the outside and subtracting the garage (if attached).
As was said...what will the info be used for..that can make a big difference.
