We recently moved into older home where the irrigation vlaves have been retrofitted to change manual valves to automatic valves. Valve control is from Superior Controls, no model number is obvious. When valves close after signal from Rainbird controller stops they do so very slowly 10-15 seconds and cause a lot of chatter. I tried to find the website for Superior controls but came up with a blank site. Any suggestions on how to fix?

I just had a sprinkler system installed. we were having a similar issue. the installer then added a small "expansion valve" to the piping between the mainline and the piping to the sprinkler system to help reduce the loud noise that would happen every time the system would turn off. worked like a charm.

not only did this fix the issue with the sprinkler system, it also stopped all the "clanging" that we had with our pipes when the dishwasher or washer would turn off.

what gianni is referring to is called a "hammer arrester". You will need to have one installed by a plumber. You are basically hearing the rush of water going to your system stopping all of a sudden and that sudden stop causes all the noise. Find a plumber in your area to install one and it should help out. Make sure and have them see the problem first in case the hammer arrester will not help you. Hard to diagnose a sound over the internet.
