What would be the best way to finish my Newel Post, Handrail, & Treads? I am planning on using Bonaseal and Bona Mega water based polyurethane. Its a flooring poly that is supposed to be really good. I was going to go ahead and use it on the Handrail and Newel posts too. Should I just use a piece of lambs wool and wipe it on? My main concern is getting in all the nooks and craneys of the newel post that has a raised panel and trim. Would it be ok to use my spray gun and spray it on? Thanks for any help.

What type of spray gun do you have? waterbased coatings don't always spray as well as their solvent based counterpart.

There shouldn't be any issues with applying the poly by brush. It will take 3-4 coats and if you sand lightly between coats there shouldn't be any unsightly brush marks. I prefer to stain and apply the 1st two coats of poly prior to installation - it's easier/quicker that way :D

Thanks for the reply mark. Im not sure of the brand of the spray gun it came with my air compressor. It probably holds about a quart. Would using a foam brush cut down on brush marks? Also is it ok to use that floor based poly on the handrails and newels?

Your cup gun should spray oil base poly/varnish fine but generally those type of spray guns don't fair well with latex paints. I'm not sure how well it would work with waterbased poly.

I've never had any issues with brush marks using a waterborne poly. I always use a quality brush and do have years of experience. Personally I don't care for the foam brushes but some diyers do like them, so if that works for you - it should be ok. Remember it takes multiple coats and you should sand between coats. That should all but eliminate any brush marks.

Floor finish is fine for the handrail/newel post. Floor finishes dry to a harder film allowing them to withstand foot traffic. They can be used on wood trim. Less expensive poly is also suitable for wood trim but that type of poly isn't always suitable for floors.

Thanks Mark. I think I will just use a brush and brush it on.
