Hi. I am currently wanting to put a wall parallel to our basement steps with a pocket door at the bottom due to the limited space at the end of the stairs. However, we need all the room at the end of the stairs we can get for moving things in and out (beds, furniture, etc.). When you get to the bottom of the steps, you have to turn left to go into the basement. This is where i want the pocket door. So, we measured the space and need a minimum of a 48" door. Problem being, good old home depot doesnt carry any larger then 36" wide doors. So I was thinking about making a homeade pocket door and frame but i have never done one before. I was hoping for some tips. Trying to keep the price of the project to a minimum in this case since its not in the main part of the house.

Have you considered an accordion door instead?

Only other comment I can think of is, do you realize a 48" door will require 8' of wall space? Do you have that much space to use? Why won't a 3' door work? Most all furniture will fit through a 3' door opening.

I dont want an accordion door because i dont think it will give me the sound proof i want. I need the 48" because it is at the bottom of a staircase so although normally 3ft would work, i need the extra foot so i can turn the furniture while going through the door. I can manage the 8ft of wall space the way its set up

Do a search for pocket doors. The framing kit and track kits are available for 48" doors. They are rather expensive.
What about two 24" swinging doors with a removable jamb between them, or a 36" door in either a swing or pocket configuration, with a one foot hinged panel that could be either locked in position to receive the 36" door or unlocked and swung against the wall when you need the extra space.
