I would like to erect a small, 24" tall x ?, brick column at the end of the driveway as a decorative piece to display my house numbers. I really don't have a design, but very simple and plain, flat across the top with maybe the top layer of brick a little different. Does that make sense? Anyway, I would appreciate it if someone could give some advice. Thank you so much.

That should be easy enough. When you say at the end of the driveway, do you mean on top of cement or will it be off to the side where there is some dirt or grass? What about a frost line in your area? The best way would be to have a footing in the ground. Also consider that it might be in your way, when you put the car in the driveway, especially if you were at a party.

Take a look at this website (Detailed Brick Columns (http://www.shackelfordmasonry.com/DBC_photos.html)), skim through the photos, get some kind of idea what you like. Obviously some of the pillars depicted are quite large but just about all of the designs can be produced according to your dimensional requirements. You can cap and build them with whatever material you fancy..Another idea is take a ride around your neighborhood keeping an eye out for pillars, If you see something you like take some pictures and your brickmason will copy it.. This is an easy project for a seasoned bricklayer, but it must be layed out correctly.
