I just bought an older home. In the kitchen, the previous owner put up on 2 walls, the thick textured wall paper and painted it red. She did not do a very good job installing it though. The seams are very apparent and it is marred in several places. She also put up a border over top of it on one wall. I don't like the color and I could just paint over it, but the seams would still stand out. Also I really dislike the rose garden border but I am afraid if I take it off, it will peel the textured paper under it anyway. So how do I get this stuff off of my walls? The texture is too rough for a Tiger to get in a score it it properly. Short of ripping the dry wall down, is there any technique that may work?

Thank you
Mari

Welcome to the forums Mari!

You still need to score the paper to get the adhesive wet. I'd use a utility knife to cut thru the paper. Care must be used so you don't cut too deep which will result in drywall damage that will need repairing later.

It won't be a fun job but it is doable. If you end up with some drywall damage we can guide you thru repairing it also.

Is the paper in question a vinyl faced paper? if so you can easily peel the top layer of the paper off which removes the barrier stopping water from getting to the glue. this method works very well with both vinyl faced and older paper faced wall coverings. Basically start in 1 corner and beging to peel back the paper and see what the result is, if only the surface of the paper starts to come off you have exactly what you want to happen now happening. after the removal of the face material simply spray with warm water and allow to soak in and reactivate the glue then remove.

A soultion I have found in the past for when the above method will not work and a tiger paw does not create sufficient scoring of the surface is to use a wire brush. Place it flat against the wall so only the tips of the bristles contact the paper and apply pressure as you drag the brush across the face of the covering. The steel bristles will rip through the surface of the paper giving the same basic results as a tiger paw scoring it.
