Hi There- I'm in the market for a 1/2 HP GDO and am probably going to go with a brand available from one of the big box stores (Genie or Chamberlain). What I'm not sure of is what type to get (chain, belt, or screw drive). I've read the different descriptions about them but they are kind of vague. Any opinions on what type to get? I'll be installing 2: 1 on an 8Ft high single bay and 1 on a 8ft high dual bay.
Also, any opinions on Genie vs. Chamberlain.
Thanks for your help!

I personally like the mid-range Genie screw drives. You will need an extension if your door is 8' tall, they used to have them right beside the openers. If not they can order one.
Chamberlain makes a good unit, but I've never had one of their screw drives and I didn't like their belt drive. Very quiet and low maintenance yes, but really nothing more than a chain drive with the belt used instead. Didn't like the exposed belt aspect. And if they are 8 ft doors you'd need a longer belt and a rail extension also.
If you are only talking about ceiling height of 8ft and have 7ft doors, then no extensions needed.

Here is some information straight from Chamberlain Mfg. Co.
Each garage door opener has its advantages. The chain drive and belt drive are good in all applications, and the screw drive is best used on one piece doors that tilt rather than go up on a track. The screw drive runs a little slower than the other two garage door openers.
The belt drive is the quietest door opener and would be recommended for garages that have a room above them.
The chain drive is the garage door opener that we have been making the longest and offers dependable performance year after year. All of our garage door openers are very reliable and require virtually no maintenance.
I personally prefer Liftmaster which is also made by Chamberlain.
