I moved into a house. It has a Trane XL802 thermostat (TCONT802AS32DDA). The system "button" switches from heat to off to cool but not to auto. The manual I downloaded from the Trane site says that there is an auto setting "if enabled." How do I enable the auto setting? If I can not enable it on an 802, what model do I have to upgrade to to get an auto setting? I really would like to have an auto setting. There are times in the fall and spring when you need cooling in the day and heat at night.

You need to go into the "Installer Set-up Menu" of your t-stat, and set up #300 needs to be changed to 1.
While you are in there., Make notes of what is everythign set to, and let me know. I'll go over it to make sure everything else is set up correct.
What is your heating and cooling system?

170 1- I take it your have a standard heating and cooling? (Model # of the furnace)
240 5 - I'd suggest to change this to 3.
280 0 - If you'd like a night light, change it to 1
500 0 - Are you pretty good about staying on top of the air filter?
510 0 - Have a humidifier on the furnace?
530 0 - I'd suggest to be turned on, unless you have a reason for this to be turned off?
600 90 610 50 - You have kids, or some who mess with the temp settings you don't want to be set too low or too warm?

You got all the codes that are in the installer set up menu.

Jay
Thank you for your advice on the settings. It is a standard heating and cooling unit without humidifier or dehumidifier or humidity sensor or any remote temp sensors. It is not a heat pump. I have gas heat. I have been told it is less than a year old. Where it is located in the attic it is a real effort to get to it to find the model number.
Where do I find out what these codes mean? I was able to read the codes off the setup menu, but I don't know what most of them stand for except for those listed in the user manual under advanced settings.
Thanks

Ok, no need to get it. You have air filter on the system?

Here is the Manual. (http://www.butcherdistributors.com/Images/Interior/tcont802803%20isntallers.pdf) Starts on page 12. Don't change the settings other than what i suggest in my last post.

Thank you Jay. The filter is at the intake of the intake plenum in the ceiling of the hallway, so I don't need to go to the attic to change it.
Re number 0240. I am wondering what cycles per hour is and the effect of changing it. Since 0250 doesn't show on the installer options, I would assume this is a single stage system. In this case what is the benefit of changing it to 3? Maybe I need to crawl in the attic and get the model number after all.

If you had a two stage, you may be able to tell with out going up into the attic.
-Remove the t-stat, and see if there is a wire on W2
-When the fan is in "ON" mode, it runs pretty quiet.
-In heating mode, you hear the furnace runs quiet for about 5 to 8 minutes, then hear it jump up to a higher speed.
But won't hurt to go up there to make sure everything is okay.
The t-stat uses cycle per hour vs a temp swing on other brands of t-stat. The t-stat will cycle the furnace 3 times an hour vs 5 times an hour at 50% capcity.
So if it's at 5, the furnace is gong to cycle on and off too often, and it can get anoying. Where, 3 is a longer cycle.. (About 20 minute run time)
