My garage door wont open, it doesnt look really old but its not brand new, when i press the button to open it makes a sound like the chain isnt catching on to the gear, I asked my dad and he said he has heard of this happening but has never had to do anything with it, so im coming here for some help and advice, should I try to fix it? or should i just look into a new one? I would like to try and fix it myself though, so if you what i could be please let me know, thanks

Sure sounds like you have a stripped drive gear. It is fixable as a DIY project but without knowing even what brand of opener you have I can't help you further. Remove the cover and look around. It should be obvious.

First give it the eyeball test. Look and see if the chain is on the sprockets at each end. If not, reinstall the chain to the sprockets and adjust chain slack.
Second, pull the emergency release that disconnects the door from the chain and open and close the door by hand. If it is hard to open - or close, spring tension needs adjusting. If it opens really hard, like you are lifting the full weight of the door, the spring is probably broken. For tension adjustment or spring replacement, I would suggest you call a pro.

ok, well i can open and close it by hand and its not hard, I believe its the gear thats bad, from what it sounds like and what ive heard I believe the gear would need to be replaced, Im not at home right now so i dont what kind is it but I will check tonight, if it is the gear, is that something hard to repace and is it pricey? if its not too bad in price then im sure i will do it myself but if its going to be the same price as a new one id rather just get the new one and install it
