Hi
I own a 20yr old home and I got an energy evaluation where one of the problems with the home was the foundation wall between the basement and the unheated garage.
This basement wall is a standard concrete foundation wall and on the basement side it has plywood sheets nailed on to the concrete.
I don't have any noticeable moisture issues but what I've been reading about the topic of vapor barriers, insulation etc.. seems to imply that having plywood right on concrete could be problematic long-term.
I was planning to install rigid board insulation but I'm not sure if I should remove the plywood and install the boards right on the concrete wall or just install over the plywood?
Seperately, from what I understand the rigid board insulation provides for my vapor barrier needs in my climate too?
Thanks,
Amir

Yes, remove the ply acting as a vapor retarder: Panhandle Insulation (http://www.panhandleinsulation.com/buildingmaterials.html)

I would remove the wood, mainly because moisture may become an issue and wood will rot and cause problems later.
I am no expert but am learning more about this. I am hearing that spray foam in a 2x6 cavity with SM board is a good thing to get done. But there are issues with that tho. I am looking into this further.
I am an Energy advisor and perform energy efficient Home evaluations. I am not supposed to make suggest building methods but I would like to help if I can.
I am curious to know what methods you have heard about regarding your walls and what the advisor or insulation guys suggested. Anything you know about this may help me, so please let me know what you find out. I will see what I can do to give you some of the info on this when I get it.
