Okay, I have read a MILLION times you must thinset under the cement board. HOWEVER, my subfloor is tongue and groove Pine? or something else. The problem is over 50 years, gaps have developed between the subfloor strips as I look up from the basement. Can anyone tell me how to apply the thinset without also applying thinset to everything in my basement? Current floor is T&G, then two layers of linoleum tiles, the 1/4" luan, then rolled vinyl. Can I leave the linoleum tiles in place and thinset over them to act as a seal? Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

You have to remove the lino and luan plywood. You cannot install cement board over the t&g pine subfloor. You must first install 1/2" plywood over the t&g, then you can install your cement board.
