I have high and low air returns in my house. On most of these pairs of returns the top grate has no damper but the lower grate has a single plate used as a damper. When closed it cuts off airflow into the lower grate and allows it into the upper grate. When open the damper is perpendicular to the grate closing off the duct to the upper grate and only allowing airflow into the lower grate.
A few of these lower grates have been replaced with grates that have a more standard multi-louvre design but this doesn't allow me to cut off the upper grate in the winter. I've been searching in vain for these single plate grate dampers and have had no luck. Does anyone here know what the correct name for this style of grate is and/or where I can find one?
I'll get a picture posted shortly.
