How many times did this happen? Did the GFCI trip? Did the circuit braker in the panel trip?

Our Marquis spa has a self-test to see if all safety devices are working. After the initial fill and start, it will shut down. Just this once.

You did not say what brand spa you have so I can't say for sure. This is a common problem with spas that have a circulate pump like Hot Springs & Tiger River...

If your spa has a circulate pump that runs all the time they tend to get stuck when the spa sits empty for a long time. Minerals build up in the pumps impeller sticking it in place. When you fill the spa and turn it on the heater kicks on and without the circulate pump running to move cool water over the heater it overheats tripping a high limit safety switch.
