We were out in the bay this past weekend and was slowly backing in reverse. We hit a rock and now the reverse is not working. We have a 60hp mercury outboard. We still have forward. Do you know what this may be and how to fix it?

is the linkage still moving the shift lever all the way back?
if it is, are there any noises in the reverse position?

The linkage seems to work fine and still will go in reverse with no noise. The prop doesn't spin but it revs up when you give it gas.

Remove the drain plug from the lower unit and let a couple drips come out. If it is grey or metalic looking you have gear problems.
