Ever since I bought a Vizio HDTV last year I have had a problem with the television freezing whenever an appliance such as the microwave, griddle, coffeemaker, or hair dryer is on which persists until it turns off. Since then we bought another HDTV which has the same problem. The appliances are on different circuits than the TVs and are not all on the same circuit. The cable company came out and checked the cable signal and claimed that it is an electrical problem. I have thought of trying a more expensive surge protector, but was wondering if anyone else has a solution to this problem.

Are you using a surge protector now? If so try pluging the tv and cable box, if your using a cable box, in the ac outlet without using the surge protector.

An under-voltage condition can also cause the symptoms. Those appliances draw a relatively large amount of current -- on the order of 10 amps or more. Do your lights dim when any of them are first turned on? If you have a multimeter, check the voltage at the receptacle when you power up one of those appliances.
To be sure you're safe, check the main wiring coming into the house where it connects to the service panel. If it's aluminum wiring it may have worked its way loose due to the heating/cooling cycles of the wire as it responds to demands over time. (Please be safe! Don't touch anything unless you're comfortable working with high voltage wires. If not, call an electrician.)
Oh, and welcome to the forums! ;)

I tried this but the same problem persisted.
