Walls and Ceilings - Knock down texture over wallpaper backing...?

Someone went wallpaper crazy :wall: in the house I just purchased. Not.A.Fan. I just want everything painted a neutral beige color. I have tried few different methods for removing the wallpaper & none are what I'd call 'Easy'. Majority of the walls are plaster underneath & therefore not smooth like drywall. The main issue I have is I've removed most of the top layer of wallpaper, but the paper backing is still adhered to the wall underneath. Much to my relief :D (as this backing is the most tedious task & messiest in my opinion) I was told that I can leave this & use drywall compound at the seams and then just prime/paint over it (the spot we tested by adding mud to seems to be adhering fine but the seam is still visible). To rectify this my b/f seems to think that we can then just use knock down texture to cover the entire wall & that should hide any still visible seems/imperfections. Does this sound like a plausible plan?? Any suggestions/direction would be greatly appreciated.

The problem with doing what you are suggesting is the mud will lift the backing off the wall. So, no, you shouldn't spray texture or paint over that backing. I find taking wall paper off plaster pretty easy. You can get a 4" razor blade with a handle on it and strip it off with doing minimal damage to the wall.

Ya, the paper backing is the easiest part of stripping wallpaper. Just get it wet and use a wide putty knife and scrape it off.

Removing wallpaper is rarely ever fun. It's best to score the paper and then get it wet. The cuts in the paper help the water to get to the paper backing and adhesive which will soften up when wet, aiding in the removal.

I guess I am just trying to rush things... I have been peeling wallpaper (minus backing) for awhile now. The house is 5 bedroom & almost every wall was covered. I am just ready to be done with it. I was encouraged b/c we did mud one seam and the mud seemed to adhere pretty well and didn't look as if anything was lifting. I guess you never know though what is underneath & down the road the smartest thing would be to just suck it up & remove the backing. That is what I will do....Just trying to save myself some time but I will prob thank you down the road. :thumbup: Much appreciate the quick feedback by the way ;)
