I have a Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener model 139.53985 This house + the door/opener are 6 years old and let's just say that I've been slacking in whatever maintenance I should have been giving to the garagedoor/opener. So now when I push the button on either the wall panel or car remote the door gets stuck once or multiple times and the opener light keeps blinking. Once the light stops blinking I'm able to push the button again. Sometimes it will go right down, sometimes I have to push the button multiple times as the door goes down a couple of feet per push. There are no obstructions so it ain't that simple. I don't know if the door is getting stuck in the tracks, if there's a problem w/ the chain, if it is off balance, or what. I have no ability to diagnose such a problem. I'll probably have to call a professional but I figured I'd check for ideas here first since I was on here for another issue. Thanks. ~Christine

First, release the emergency disconnect and then open and close the door by hand. It should go up and down smoothly if it is in balance. If it binds at some point, make note of that part of the tracks and clean any dirt, grease, or other crud from the tracks. The rollers may need a drop of oil at their shafts, but the track itself does not need lubrication.
If the door is now working smoothly, reconnect the release to the drive chain. If the door still binds when closing, look at the motor housing for the opener. There should be up force and down force adjustment screws on the housing. Try a little increase in down force -1/8 - 1/4 turn at a time and see if that cures your problem.

Thanks. I have to try some of this stuff this week before the door just totally stops working due to my procrastination.

If the opener light keeps blinking, it is the safety eye sensors are miss- aligned or not working properly

As soon as the door gets stuck, the opener light blinks off and on about half a dozen times or so. It's like a slow blinking and clicking. Once it stops blinking the button will be able to function again so I can get the door the rest of the way down. I wiped off the eye sensors and they seem aligned as best as I can tell. When I walk in and out of the gargage, the light kicks on as it's supposed to when the sensors pick up movement so that's working. I can check them again though. Thank you.
