I have 3 Skyrocket junipers that are 3 years old and about 6-7' high. The location is not ideal - 12' away from a north facing house with some morning sun, good sun in the summer afternoon and some good western exposure.
They seem to be doing well although I have numerous upper shoots that have significant horizontal growth and are getting them too wide in appearance. I would like to re-shape slightly and encourage more interior growth.
Can I trim? If so, when, where and how?
Or do it just jerk them out and look for different narrow accents as replacements?

Since I have had no responses, I assume I can do it anytime and will start the week-end.
Is it best to shear off the outer branching (like shaping) or do I use a pruner to clip of the longer, fast growing "renegade" branches close to the main stem that are trying to compete with the main stem?
I have not had a snow problem, but I see the newer longer branches to go outward could have a problem unless I wrap the thing with burlap this winter.
