I recently went to a big box store and asked for some stovepipe for a wood stove. the guy took me to the gas vent pipe section and showed me some double wall galvanized vent pipe, which he said I could use instead of the stainless double wall, which was twice the price. I was wondering if the gas vent pipe was made to handle the higher temps of the wood heat or if he was misinformed. I specifically asked him if I could use this as a chimney pipe for my wood stove and he said "yes" . I'd love to use it instead of the stainless pipe because it is one third the cost. So, can it take the heat!?!?!?!

Thanks! I finally found the temperature rating for that stuff. SO GLAD I didnt listen to that idiot at the store. It's only rated for 530 degrees ( wood can easily get a lot hotter than that) , even regular single-wall stovepipe is rated for 1000 degrees and stainless is rated for 2100!

There are 3 concerns you should have:

1. Chimney must meet the installation for the wood stove provided by the manufacturer.

2. The code requirements.

3. The existing insurance company was willing to insure the house.

My mother installed a wood burning stove that met the manufacturers requirements, but her existing insurance company would not insure it. She had to find a new company that would cover the house. They just had too many homes covered with wood burners and did not want any more exposure. They cannot be forced to sell insurance if they have too much exposure. She called 4 companies and 2 were willing to give coverage.

OK, I'm sure glad I looked on here. I am currently installing steel siding on my garage. I am to the point of flue.
About five years ago I installed single wall galv., didn't last as long as I had hoped. During that install it was kinda hurry up status. Existing opening had metal shield/thimble on exterior but nothing interior. I installed 6" gas vent wall shield on interior, didn't relize I.D. was larger than vent pipe O.D. Installed additional shield in chase from scrap 8" galv. Seemed to work OK.
Trying to decide what best for wall chase. For saftey and siding protection. I think may use single wall black vent pipe. (6") For flue replacement.
I too had looked local........was recomended to use 6" gas vent for chase. I don't think so! This is wood burner btw. Wall chase is appx. 6' above stove. Any sugg. welcome...
Didn't intend on highjacking thread...sorry
