Does anyone have any experience comparing materials when building a pergola. We are wanting an attached pergola in white. We don't know if we should use cedar and paint or if fiberglass is just as good in not better??? Thoughts anyone?

The covers that I do are mostly aluminum, but I've done quite a few vinyl ones as well. Wood?? Too much maintenance -- the customers usually shy away from them, though there are a few ...
Fiberglass?? Never seen one. Who makes them? Who sells them?? Do they meet snow and wind loads??
Whatever you do, make sure that you check with your local bldg. dept. first. They can have some rules and restrictions that simply make no sense. For instance, within the city limits around here, I can install a solid aluminum cover, but cannot install a solid vinyl cover. And, while the aluminum cover can be attached, the vinyl cannot. Who knows how they arrived at those restrictions!!

If you go with cedar, you must apply a good solid coat of exterior oil base wood primer to seal the tannins in the cedar. Failure to do so will result in tannin bleed which will discolor the white paint.
