Have removed a number of trees and scrub bushes from the side of my home. Want to seed this area with a seed mixture heavy on fescues since the area is still in medium shade most of the day. I have ground down the stumps, cleared out a lot of the vines, and have pretty well leveled the area. Total area is 6000 - 8000 square feet and soil is full of sandstone shale. Not much topsoil, but there is some grass on part of the area, planted by a previous owner. What I need to know is can I just go in with a slitter seeder or should I first rototill the area and then use a broadcast seeder, with a light finishing raking? Should I amend the soil first and, if so, with what? I want to seed 09/20. Location is central Ohio. Thanks.

You need to remove as much of the stump residue as possible as this will make seed establishment difficult. You indicate fescue because it's a shady area, fescues are around for all conditions, you need a fescue for shade and you need to go to a non big box hardware store or garden center and get local expertise on what works best on your area.

You may need to add soil if the area is in poor condition as well as other amendments such as manure.tilling those in would help.If you rake behind seeding don't be aggresive enough to overly bury the seed. You would be helped by using starter fertilizer when you seed.Water early in the day not late day or at night as this promotes fungus.
