This summer has been tough on my lawn. I've had a lot of browning and moss growth. I'm looking to, over the next week or so because the weather will be perfect here in Long Island, to re-establish the lawn going into the winter.

My question is: What type of grass should I be using on a relatively shady lawn? Also, how do I get rid of the moss since that seems to be choking out the grass? The quandry I have is that if I kill off the moss, then I have nothing but brown, or in some spots bare dirt.

I need to fill in the area by the curb with topsoil. How much do I need? I figured it'd be about two inches to get it to just over curb level, plus I was going to break up the existing soil there.

The first thing you want to do is get your soil tested by your state's agricultural extension agency to determine what you need to do.Moss generally means acid which means lime and you need guidance on how much etc.You can't fix your problems in a few days or a week."Browning" can mean anything including disease and insects.

Secondly you need to establish a relationship with a local non big box hardware store or garden center and get local expertise on which seeds do best in your area. There is a wide variety of shade fescues and they all are at least somewhat regional as far as what works where.

As for soil, these same people can give you an idea from the measurements of the area.
