Kitchen Small Electric Appliances - Is very warm microwave exterior normal?

After cooking four minutes, the top of the brand new Kenmore .7 cubic foot counter top microwave was very warm and the side where the motor is stayed warm for a while. Is that a problem?

Do other microwaves get very warm on the outside as they cook?

You will feel some warmth on the side where the interior light bulb is located. Other than that, I've never noticed the exteriors of my microwaves being particularily warm, even after several minutes use.

Can you feel any air flow from the internal cooling fan? If its working, then I imagine you're OK unless the warmth is really uncomfortable to the touch. In that case, you might want to contact Sears and get their opinion.

Are you saying a fan is supposed to come on when you open the door?

I do intend to call Sears.

No, the fan should be running while the food is cooking. You should be able to feel some airflow, usually coming out of the back of the microwave. The fan keeps the magnatron tube cool as well as venting the cooking compartment.

When the door is open, nothing should be on except the light.

I put my hand behind the microwave for a couple of seconds and didn't feel a fan while it was running. Thanks for giving me something specific to ask Sears.
