I'm one of those folks who bought a house with a cantilevered deck, and who didn't know better at the time. Anyway, typical story, portions of the joists on the exterior are rotten. I'm going to replace the deck with a free-standing one, but I need to know how to seal the area where the joists exit the house. The exterior is stucco. Any suggestions?

surveyor,
Welcome to the forums.
Those decks are something that simply never should have been allowed!!
About all you can do is cut the joists off as flush with the stucco as possible then spend time with spade bits, chisels and whatever else to hog out the butt ends of the joists back inside the wall. Once you have them cut back, flash the stucco then patch it.

Thanks Lefty. That's sort of what I was envisioning. Thanks for mentioning the flashing too. I'm trying to picture doing that. I imagine that would involve using SAF flashing, right? Any tips on patching technique? Some of the joists are over garage doors and windows.
