If I were using double 2x10 beams, would I fill this in as:

2 x 10

?

WHAT???

If you are using two 2X10's as your beam, that's what your beam is -- two 2X10's.

Putting a piece of plywood on edge and exposing it to the weather is a waste of time and money. It won't last.

Simpson makes connectors (BCS2-2/4) specifically for installing double 2X beams on 4X posts. Simpson Strong-Tie - Helping to Build Stronger, Safer Structures (http://www.strongtie.com)

I was referring to the diagram on page 6 of the Design for Code Acceptance.

What that is showing is a beam that consists of two 2X's face to face. That's all. If you look at the pages previous, you'll see that they are calling for 6X posts that are notched on one side for the dbl 2X's to set in.

Ply means layers. 5 ply plywood, steel belt ply tires, etc.
