I'm not sure I'm using the correct terms here, hope you can figure out what I'm asking.

I've noticed lately (alot) that people are installing what appear to be ridge shingles along the gable ends of the roof so that half the shingle hangs over the edge essentially framing the... bargeboard(?). I have two questions.

It looks great. Are there potential problems you can think of in doing this? I like the look but I don't want to cause problems down the road.

Second. If it is an acceptable practice, would one eliminate the drip edge? I've seen some newer construction that appears to be flush to the... bargeboard (?) While many of the older homes with new roofs seem to have a gap where the ridge shingles overhang. This would seem to indicate that the drip edge is still intact. Which is best.... correct?
