Roofing, Gutters and Waterproofing - ice and water shield instead of step flashing

i am getting a new roof and i have 1ft wide rabbit runs. the old shingles are thinner that new ones so the new ones will not fit under the clapboard siding on the side of the dormer. my roofer will tear off the siding and he wants to put ice and water shield on the rabbit run and bend it up the side of the dormer instead of using step flashing. two friends have told me that the ice and water shield will not last very long because it is bent and creased into the corner. should i insist on step flashing.
the roofer wants to use ice and water shield because it is faster to install. taking the siding off is faster than trying to get flashing under the existing siding.

i wouldnt really count on the ice and water shield to do the job of step flashing... why not use the existing flashing that should be there? or is there none? ice and water shield isnt really ment to be used as a flashing alone. you could put down ice and water shield and then put the step flashing and the ice and water shield would give it some extra protection. so my personally and professional opinion. (ive been working for roofing contractors since i was 17) insist on the step flashing.

If it was my house/roof roof. I would only use proper flashing. the "peel and stick" products are not recommended by roofer of material suppliers for good reason.

he's not using any peel and stick, anywhere. it's ice and water shield, which is a good product under shingles. but he wants to use it as a flashing and bend it, crease it, into a corner. but you're right, regular flashing is probably better. thanks

Yes, you are all correct. I will insist on step flashing. I talked to an engineer at WR Grace who makes ice and water shield and he said I could use it if i want to but to definately use step flashing. In fact, it would not be up to code if i didn't use step flashing.

I hope my roofer meant that he would use ice and water shield as well as step flashing, but i will insist.

Ice and water shield deteriorates from UV... it needs to be covered. So if they plan on using it as an exposed flashing, it is not a good idea.
