Hi there. We have heard many opinions about whether to stain log lap siding before or after the actual installation. What is best? Also, what is the recommended fastener for installing the log lap siding, ie. screws or nails? Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the forums!

The answer depends :D
If the siding is kiln dried it can be stained at any time but some stains have specfic recoat instructions. Some must be recoated within a specfic time frame or you have to wait until the stain is either chemically removed or becomes well weathered.

Obviouslly staining before installation has advantages - no ladder to climb, the wood covered by the lap is stained [so if the siding shrinks any there is no line of raw wood showing] hard to get to areas are protected even if you can't get another good coat of stain on them.

IMO the final coat should always be applied after installation! This will cover any damage to the finish caused by installation or even storage of the siding after it was stained on saw horses.
