I am gettting ready to remove some awful vinyl siding on a historic home and am looking to replace it with something a little more historic. I was going to use Hardishingle half-round panels to do the job. However the Lowes rep said that they weren't available in my area (Louisville, KY). This agrees with the Hardie site which has a "Hardizone" system that lists "appropriate" products by your zip code. I'm not sure why these would be inappropriate to my location, but it appears I can't get them. Does anybody have any ideas on alternatives? I really want to go with a rot proof, yet paintable (read not vinyl) alternative to cedar shingles. Thanks in advance.

Update:
My local lumberyard sells Certainteed cementitious panels with fish scale profile (7" exposure x 48") for $11 apiece.
Anyone have experience with them? How convincing are they? It's always hard to tell on a tiny monitor.
