I have a yellowjacket nest in the ground by my mailbox, I first started seeing the grass in that area dying, so when I investigated I found the nest; now the grass thats dead is about a foot wide, and 2-3 feet long, the nest I'm guessing. A nest that big according to web sites can hold 5-10 THOUSAND BEES!!!! Will I be able to kill them by dropping a smoke-bomb in the hole and covering it up with a brick for a day or two- its the same smoke bombs I use for getting rid of moles. Pest controll people I've called want 200 bucks on average to get rid of them, any thoughts would be appreicated- thank you.

If the nest really is that big the smoke bomb,a modern version of the sulfur candle, may do the trick.

That said there are a number of threads here with the same way I've told a lot of people.Buy some liquid sevin,at least a pint.Pour it in an average household bucket of around 2 gallons mix it up and go to the nest after dark and flood the nest with insecticide laced water.Do it more than once if needed and if you find a second opening do it there too.

You must kill the queen to get rid of the nest and the queen is well underground.sprays etc will not help and failure to kill the queen will result in this problem continuing no matter what you do.

Yep, be aware of the second hole. It is there for a purpose. They will escape from it if forced to. As Spdavid says, you have to get the stuff deep, and liquid is the only way to go.

ok I got the Sevin Concentrate, now when I pour the Sevin/water mix into the hole will it kill the bees fast, or do I need a getaway car on stand by because the bees will come out and die later?

You do this after dark, when the bees have gone back into the nest for the night.Use as little light, like a flashlight,as you can.

By the time the bees would normally come out after daylight they will have long since died.

The next morning after you do this check the nest to make sure all is well.If not do this again.
