Could someone please tell me how to draw an ecliptic arc for, say, a door arch.
From memory it involved two nails and a bit of string but I may be wrong, and in any ase I've forgotten how.
Thanks, any help will be much appreciated.

As you know this is more difficult to explain than to do. I hope this jars your memory.
Major Axis = AB
Minor Axis = CD
Center = E
Arc Points = x y

C

A____x______E______y____B

D
[/code]
From C or D using 1/2 AB (the distance AE) scribe an arc to intersect at points x & y along the Major Axis. :: Cx = 1/2 AB or AE and Cy = 1/2 AB or AE. Position the string on x & y with the pencil held under the string at C. Keeping equal tension throughout scribe the arc, C to A then back to B.

For a door arch, do this.
Find the width of the door. If it is an existing opening, Nail a 2x4 across the opening parallel to the ground. Find the center of the 2x4 and drive a nail part way in. Tie a string to this nail and draw the string to one side of the door opening, this is half the arch. tie another nail to this end and then scribe your arch.
