We recently purchased an old home that is badly in need of some major repairs. Several of the window frames are in very bad condition. We'd like to use new construction windows (my husband has installed them before) so that we can increase width of some windows by eliminating the space for the sash pulls. We're also going to side over the wood siding on the house with vinyl, but not until next summer. Some of the windows need replaced immediately.
Our first concern is aligning the windows properly so that the J channel is where it should be for the siding.
From all I've been reading, after house wrap is put on, furring strips are added to attach the siding to. Should we frame around the outside of the rough opening with furring strips before installing the windows?
My second Question: If we install windows this fall, is there a danger of moisture getting in behind the exterior window frame over the next several months? If so, should we caulk them temporarily with seal & peel, or something?
Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions!

I would suggest taking the existing siding off before installing new. If you decide to remove the existing siding then you could install the new windows now and siding later by putting temporary trim around the unit so you can flash and caulk properly. If you are not removing the existing siding then wait to install new windows.

Thanks, Bill, but neither removing the siding now nor waiting to install windows is a good option. The house is over 100 years old, and there is nothing but sheeting under the siding. Some of the windows frames are rotted so badly that you can't put the windows up without the glass falling out.
If we aren't going to either freeze to death or bankrupt ourselves with utility bills, we have to leave the siding on AND install new windows, at least on the West side, where the damage is most severe.
