I am having the same problem IN REVERSE (as this person) only when I open the garage door, it goes up fast all the way then reverses immediately. I have to push the button many times to stop the cycle...then it finally stops and stays open. It is a GENIE model 404 screw type. It otherwise works fine. I was told it might be a 'force adjustment' issue but I can't figure out where the force adjustment switch is. I also cleaned the button on the wall to see if it was sticking. :o

The door opens and shuts fine by hand and is really balanced pretty well. The door sensors seem to be aligned and both lights are lit....red on left side and green on right. The shaft comes out the back of the motor and attaches to a spring where you adjust the force. The shaft has a sprocket that appears to be a speed sensor as there is a magnetic pickup beside the teeth on the sprocket.

What else would cause the opener to start reversing? I can stop the opener as soon as it starts to reverse and force it to try again, and usually after a couple attempts at that it goes on down.
Any ideas???**************************

You describe a Genie Excelerator, it raises fast but closes more slowly. Usually, when going up and experiencing a force adjustment problem, the door will just stop. I don't understand the reversing while going up. Does it do past the upper limit stop switch?? Also, you will see a blinking LED at the back of the unit(you may have to tilt down the light cover). Count the number of blinks, then refer to your owners manual. It should give you the problem or at least a clue. The force adjustments are located just next to the blinking LED.

Actually a Genie 404 isn't an Excelerator model. It's an older, discontinued model. It could be a faulty circuit board or defective open limit switch. More likely the circuit board since you mention it opens faster than usual. Try the systematic approach and start with replacing the circuit board. I believe it is discontinued; however, you might be able to find it on ebay or, perhaps, the entire opener on ebay.
