my idea was to connect a car 12 volt alternator to a wind mill
and run that to a 12 volt car or better yet semi truck battery.
then run a 110 inverter off the battery to power little things around the garage, or out in the back shed that has no power to it.

will this work?

It could work, but you will have to do some research. First, you need to find out how fast the alternator needs to turn to produce meaningful power. Second, you need to find out the maximum rpm it can handle. Then you need to determine how to attach it to the windmill. Whether pulleys or gears, you need to calculate the ratios. A governor for top speed would be good.

For a reliable source of wind, mount it near a politician. LOL

i think as long as it spins somewhat quickly maybe 2-3 rev. per sec. 180 per min. it should out put. they should output the same at any speed, or close to it. (right?)

i was going to run it off of a pulley a v-belt as i have tons of this stuff laying around. i don`t think maximum is too much of a concern as long as it doesn`t fly apart like during a hurricane.

as soon as i get some extra money i will try it.

Most alternators need considerably more rpm's to produce useable power. It is very common for a car to have pulleys sized so the alternator runs 2.5 times as fast as the engine so the alternator can produce useable power while the car is idling or driving in stop & go traffic. So, when your car is idling at 750 rpm the alternator may be turning 1'875 rpm.

Many of the alternator output charts I found online do not register an output until about it is turning 1'500 rpm, with peak output at around 6'000 rpm. Some after market or high output alternators will produce at a thousand or less rpms but that is still a long ways from 180.
