I started a wonderful raised bed garden with a recommended soil composition of 1/2 top soil, 1/4 mushroom compost and 1/4sand. I planted cucmber plants from seed around my trellis and they have taken off in an unreal way. I thinned them out but those that remain have taken on humongous vines and are growing still! Many flowers and many bees but so far only a single cucmber. I should note that I started late in the season for this area (NW Indiana)- maybe planted them in late June.
A couple of questions.
First, have I lessened the chances of getting much from the plants because of competition from the other nearby thriving plants?
Also, should I trim back the vines (I have read about this) so that the quality of the cucumbers that are produced don't have to compete with new flowers?
Finally, am I ruining the soil for next year by having to many plants in one place?
Thanks for any advice you can offer- this site has been great help in the past on other issues and I am hoping to find some insight on these issues!
