Help please!!

We just moved into our brand new house a month ago and the loam laid by the builder is FULL of weeds! In the past month they have grown to about waist height!

I'd like to do something to get them under control, as we will be laying sod next spring/summer once more houses are built around us and the ground has had time to settle.

Any thoughts??

I was thinking of laying that weed mesh stuff everywhere, but will that really kill what is under it? I'd much rather not have to go out there and pull every single weed by hand, I think that would age me 50+ years as we have a large yard!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I'd spray the area with RoundUp,which would kill off what you have but not contaminate the soil, then since the growth is so high you really must remove it.The possibilities include tilling it into the soil as the RoundUp will eliminate regrowth.Be sure to coat the plants with the RU but you do not need to soak the soil.Do not cut the growth until after spraying and a day or so for absorption.

Depending on where you are you may have to apply RU more than once if your growing season lasts into say Oct/Nov.If your growth has a significant amount of actual grass in it use broadleaf weed killer instead of RU.Also there may be a short period of mostly bare soil until cooler weather.

Once you kill off current growth and as soon as it cools off where you are I'd plant annual (sometimes called winter) rye grass to cover and protect the area until you plan to sod and/or next year when it warms up.This is rye grass that only lasts through the cool weather season, can be tilled in after it's death and will preserve the area, keep it from being a mud hole, until you are ready for your next step.

You may want to act asap as weeds that tall are bound to re-seed and then you would have to deal with seeds which might be harder to control.

Clear out 41 Plus and a 2-4-d amine mixture has always worked great for me. Do a google product search and find the best price. Clear out is a generic form of roundup that works just as good. You may want to wait a few weeks to replant. Good Luck:thumbup:
