Question: We just purchased a home and i've removed the fireplace insert. The fireplace was originally wood burning and then rigged/converted to gas. The insert was metal and nearly impossible to remove...

Now, we have a large opening where the entire insert used to be and I would like to rebuild the fire box with fire brick instead of using a metal insert.

What materials do i need to use to begin building the firebox? Currently, I can see the sub floor and the original framing of the house, along with the chimney...

High Knox, You may want to check with your insurance co and local code office. I'm not trying to be a wet blanket, but I have seen insurance co's cancel coverage when they discover a fire place. Now you are looking to create a DIY fp without any of the certifications an insurance co would look for.

Now, assuming you get the approval to go ahead with a fireplace, my question would be "why". They are negative for energy value and a negative for home value. I know they are nice to look at, but they do take some practice to keep from burning your house down. An open fireplace is also not compatible with today's air sealing and insulating practices. I would suggest getting the chimney inspected and repaired if needed to be safe and then looking at a wood or other modern air tight insert.
