I have a broken ridge beam and several cracked rafters. I want to repair the damaged lumber and increase the load bearing capacity of my roof by sandwiching the the entire ridge beam and all of the rafters between plates of steel. Can someone help me or direct me to determine what thickness steel plate I need to install? Taking into consideration the wood that is there already and specify what would be needed to increase it from there?

Old houses were often built, successfully, and also have held up, with no ridge beam at all!

Why did yours crack, along with some rafters? Are your exterior walls bowing outward, and the ridge beam sagged between it's end supports?
