I have a direct vent fireplace in my home that I bought last year that seems to transmit all kinds of drafts into my house. I always wondered, i can see straight out the vent to the outside through the back of the fireplace ( of course the pipe angles up and has a diffuser on the outside, so i dont see RIGHT outside). Should there be some kind of damper on this?

Yes, there are some DV that you can see outside, but that usually isn't where you get your drafts from. The firebox is sealed from the inside of your home. Where you are probably getting drafts is from the improper installation if it. It may be as simple as sealing the openings where the gas pipe and wires penetrated the outer firebox or as complex as the chase on the side of your home was improperly installed/insulated. You should call a professional to have it properly serviced and sealed.
