I think there is a name of what I found on one of my trees, It looks like light green dried moss but is hard and crusty, I think someone told me what it was a couple years ago and if I understand correctly, it could eventually kill the tree. Tree seems fine but there are blotches of this green stuff; any idea what I might be describing and what I might treat it with before it gets out of hand? Always appreciate advice.

Moss or lichens shouldn't really hurt a tree..plenty of them out there. Is it an area that doesn't get a lot of sun?

Old saying for people lost in the woods..."moss always grows on the north side of a tree". Not really true for all areas though.
