A few days ago, my roommate spilled tea on our gas stove. About 15 minutes later, flames were shooting out of one of the knobs. I quickly unplugged the unit, which stopped the fire, but now I don't know what to do with it. Is this stove now garbage? We've been using the stovetop burners by lighting them manually, but we can't use the oven at all (unit is still unplugged for safety). Is it possible for me to replace the wiring on the igniter? Or is there a circuit board that is fried?
It seems to me that stoves shouldn't burst into flame when a little liquid gets spilled on them. Unfortunately, it's an old stove and not under warranty.

Hello Gumby Cascadia. Welcome to the Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
The problem condition described sounds like the burner and or burner tube had gotten flooded. When that happens, the gas coming out of the orifice, which is beneath the knob, cannot reach the burner head.
As a result, the gas comes out of the secondary air opening. Which is the shutter opening on the burner tube just beneath the knob, on the gas valve.
Usually, when a liquid spills over onto the burner head, it can also clog the ports or slots on the burner head. If any are they must be cleared and cleaned to prevent future conditions as you described.
Also check the burner tube for any obstructions inside it. You're going to have to remove the entire burner hear and tube to due this. Not all that difficult.
Take notice of how it was removed during the removal process and re-install it in reverse order and exactly as it is presently.
"Be sure the electrical power and the gas supply to the appliance is turned off, before attempting any repairs. Always check for gas leaks whenever the appliance is moved and/or a repair includes any connection of a gas part."
