Hi,

I am planning on relocating a telephone jack from one kitchen wall to another, and it would end up being located about 12" above an existing electrical outlet. The wiring to that outlet is coming in from the right side from another existing outlet (there's a pass-through between them), so there wouldn't be any electrical wire running parallel to the telephone wire, which will be coming down from the attic. My question is, is 12" enough space between the jack and the outlet to ensure that there wouldn't be any interference or noise? I've got two books that mention how to install phone jacks but neither one mentions any warnings about placement (and I only want to cut ONE hole in the wall!).

Any tips or info would be very appreciated.

Thanks!!

It should be fine..the main thing you don't want (and you don't have) is the phone line and power lines running parallel to each other w/o at least a 12" separation.

Hi there. I understand the 12" space now but can you still have an electrical outlet in the same gang box as a phone/cable hook up if at least the wires are not parallel with each other?

Yes, you may although it might be ideal. If you do the box is required to have a divider that separates the line voltage from the low voltage.

I have never experienced any noise over voice lines from power cables.

I think Tolyn meant to write it might NOT be ideal. Understand that you MUST have the division plate separating the line voltage section from the low voltage section. The only boxes that I know of that fit the description are the Carlon "SuperBlue" boxes and you need to purchase the division plate separately from the box itself.
