I need to replace ceiling exhaust fans in bathrooms, but the replacement models I have been able to find are different dimensions in the housing. Of particular concern is that the fans are shorter in length, leaving up to 2" gap in the ceiling. Not being very comfortable with patching up the ceiling, I nevertheless need to try before calling someone in. What would be the best method to make this repair?

Do I understand correctly that the new fan covers 3 sides of the hole leaving just 1 side to add new drywall?

The easiest fix would be to take a piece of wood longer than the hole and screw it to the ceiling [inserted above ceiling at the edge that needs repair] and then screw a 2" piece of drywall to it. You would then tape and mud the seams. Assuming you don't have any scrap drywall to use, look for a house under construction [or maybe remodel] - they will have scrap drywall and should be more than happy to give you enough to do the job.
