Hello, The exterior of our home is all wood siding (T11) with wood window framing around the windows. Some of the framing is rotting and must be replaced. I have replacing some of the larger boards in the past using pine, first priming them with Zinsser's and then painting them. They have held up very well over the last few years. Now that I am also going to replace the window trim I wanted to get some advice regarding which type of wood I should use. Is the pine OK or should I use something else? Considering I am going to paint the wood it seems pointless to buy something like cedar. My neighbor used pressure treated wood. Thanks,

If you want truly rot resistant material use Azek or similar PVC product.

I am not too worried about rot resistance over the long run. We will most likely only be living in this house for a couple of years.

I'm a painter, not a carpenter but I don't see anything wrong with using pine. You should prime it well with an oil base primer [it will seal better than latex] caulk as needed and 1-2 top coats of a decent latex house paint.

Whatever you put there won't last longer than if you were to flash the head over the windows. Another flashing over the trim, especially on T-1-11 with any grooves. Some caulk the grooves over the trim, which will last a couple of years, then failure. Be safe, G
