Hello,
I cabled a wild Locust tree about 9 years ago because it had a split trunk. I just examined the cabling I did and I found the following: The eye bolts (lags) I screwed into the tree and connected the cable to, are almost buried into the tree and the cable (1/4 dia) is "extremely" taught. I don't know what I should do at this point. The cabling has worked well as the tree has not split any further but the tree has grown very large. I'd estimate it's 50'-60' tall. I'd like to lossen the cable put I'm worried because it's so taught, that it might snap back or something worse. Any advice would be appreciated. thank you.

I would not do a thing with it. You have saved the tree and it has grown around it. Just leave it be and it will be just fine.

Jack,
thank you for your input. As I mentioned the tree has gotten quite tall maybe 40'-50'. The location of the cabling that I did on the tree 8-9 years ago is only at 15'-16' up. (that's as far as I could get with a ladder) Given that the tree has grown so tall, do you think that the location of the cabling (15'-16') is sufficiant? I should also mention that I at the time I did the cabling, I also installed a 5/8" threaded rod completely through the tree crotch just above were it split and installed large washers and nuts and both ends of the threaded rod. The washers and nuts have become completely enveloped by the tree. thanks again for your input. mross
