My tabletop microwave oven is more than ten years old but works perfectly. It has some rust in the corners at the back of the cavity. I know they make special paint for the cavity but it has a pretty steep price tag, over $12. a can is what I saw.

What I'm wondering is if I can use some automotive spray paint I already have rather than either tossing the oven or having to buy a can of high-priced paint that I will probably use only a fraction.

If I was going to try anything it would be epoxy based appliance enamel. This is about as close as you can get in a consumer level paint to what it has on it now, which is probably baked on enamel.

What I can't tell you nor anyone else can is if any paint will give off fumes during the use of a microwave. The rusted areas really should be primed and that too might create fumes.Whether there's any risk or not is unclear.

I'd be worried that something in the paint would heat intensely when exposed to microwaves and perhaps burst into flames. $12 for special paint is a small price to pay for safety. Of course it could be less obvious like toxic fumes absorb by the food which isn't so obvious till someone is poisoned.

Really if you're not going to use the actual paint it's time for a new microwave.

Or just live with the rust and don't worry about it. At 10 years old, I doubt your microwave is going to last so much longer that its going to rust clear through the metal. Plus, usually the interior is so dark when the oven is off that no one can see inside anyway.

Rust inside the microwave is exposing the raw metal and could cause arcing itself. Don't know if I wouldn't put a new one on a wish list now.

Thanks, guys. I didn't think that just any old paint was a good idea, just wanted some confirmation.

I'm going to just continue to use it as it is until it craps out. It's probably more like fifteen years old or more as I used it at my old house for at least three to five years. When I moved here the previous owner's left a microwave oven that I used for a few years before it died.

Everyone has their ideas. I had the same problem with a older microwave. Most of the time the rust is being caused by the cheap paint or poor cleaning and priming of the surface by the
factory.
I brushed up the area really good and lightly sanded it. I primed it with a primer and sprayed a coat of the same color white on the rusted area.
I let it dry for a day or so. Then put a item in such as a potato.. to let it run for about 15 minutes and pitched the test item. Wiped it out and it was fine for another 2 or so years. The rust will come back eventually, this is just a temporary fix no matter what you do.
So expect to buy a new one in couple years at best..

I could do that, Larry, I sure wouldn't lose anything by trying. It's not a large or fancy microwave and I've sure gotten my money's worth from it so I could try your suggestion and all I'd be out would be the time to do it and maybe having to buy a new oven this weekend.
